Research

Posted by Joel @ 4:07 pm, 10 March 2009.

Joel Nothman is currently a PhD student at the University of Sydney’s School of IT under the supervision of James Curran in Schwa Lab (see my page there).

In 2008, I completed an undergraduate B.Sc. (adv) in Computer Science receiving First Class Honours and University Medal, as well as a B.A. with majors in Linguistics and Classical Hebrew.

My research interests in Computational Linguistics include:

  • novel sources of computational-linguistic data
  • semi-supervised acquisition of lexical-semantic resources
  • harnessing Wikipedia and related resources (for linguistic knowledge, not just world knowledge)
  • (domain-adaptive) information extraction
  • methods of corpus comparison
  • machine learning: joint models; semi-supervised approaches
  • tokenization, multi-word expressions, named entities, compound-noun structure

  1. This is a very worthwhile project and great to know the Wikepedia will benefit!
