October

Filed under: Language by Joel @ 7:35 pm, 13 October 2007.

I pointed out this time last year that the Hebrew month of (Mar)cheshvan actually comes from the Akkadian for “eighth month”. So it means the same as October.

Nonetheless, October is the tenth month1, and (Mar)cheshvan is the second2.

Notes:

  1. As of 153 BCE. []
  2. Probably thanks to Macedonian influence, the Hebrew calendar shifted from starting in Spring to the Autumnal equinox. []

  1. As I’m sure you would have worked out (and neglected to mention for some entirely logical reason) Cheshvan is the 8th month when the months are counted from Nissan (the first month), rather than Tishrei (the New Year)
