You’re getting married??

Filed under: General by Joel @ 11:36 pm, 30 November 2006.

I heard on the weekend about another couple getting engaged. Another (religious) couple with one partner from the yeargroup below me at my high school, Moriah. I had been commenting for a while that the difference between their grade and mine is drastic: as far as I know, while there is at least one in our year (class of 01) with a baby girl, there are none (or maybe one) who have been engaged or married. From the class of 2002, we already had Harry, Shmuli, Nat, David, Anna, and now Ari. (Did I miss anyone?) I am not sure whether this is a direct reflection on the yeargroup being the first to go through the full Dave Shaw Counterpoint Camp programme, but it may well be, seeing as all the couples are religious (in one way or another), and a few not born that way.

So this afternoon I received a message on MSN from Stacey. Plain and simple:

did you know that josef faul got engaged?

My reply? “… no!! when???!! to whom?” She seemed to have proof on her side (”though it might be a joke”) from Only Simchas. Hmm.

Josef did graduate from Moriah College. He also moved into my bedroom when I moved out in 2002 to spend the year in Israel. When I came back and was posessive of my room (although he’d lived in it more months than I ever had), he moved a couple of doors down the hallway and we shared the semi attached to our house (with different amounts of strife at different times). Last year he moved out. He spent a while in Melbourne, with his girlfriend, Abigail. He returned to Sydney and found himself a sickly boring job (software tester) for much of the year.

And now, engaged? I receive another email from Oz. It’s Nikki: she dramatically describes seeing Josef last night at a party, asking him what brings him to town, and receiving his unexpected answer, “I came to propose to my girlfriend,” and the flash of Abigail’s ring in her face…

It was confirmed. I called Josef and ran myself out of Skype credit (that’s alright: there are cheaper options).

The point of the story is, well, there is certainly someone in our Moriah yeargroup that’s engaged. I’m not sure what DS had to do with it.

But an enormous mazel tov and best wishes to Josef and Abigail. I can’t wait to get back (in July, now) to see you both (not to mention the other couples)…

  4. Jordan:
    (1) weddings are often religious events
    (2) marriage, and possibly even monogamy, is a religious construct (and engagements are a symbol of monogamy and intent to marry, usually)
    (3) at least Judeo-Christian religious values put emphasis on marriage (and at a younger age) than does modern Western secular society
    (4) when religion forbids or limits sexual relations prior to marriage, young couples have greater incentive.
